Iliya Liampert
Welcome to my website. I am a third-year Ph.D. student at Michigan State University and a research fellow at the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR).
My research focuses on congressional politics, minority representation, and American political institutions. I study how racial and ethnic minorities gain and exercise their power within Congress, with particular attention to congressional committees as places of institutional gatekeeping. My work examines descriptive and substantive representation, committee assignments and their role in shaping minority legislators’ influence, and broader questions of congressional leadership and interbranch relations. I am also interested in minority candidates and campaigns, including how voters respond to the rhetorical strategies of racial minority candidates.
